By the end of the XIX century, Poland did not exist on the maps, partitioned by three neighbouring empires. Despite this, a surprisingly large number of the pioneers of the Cinema industry and Hollywood’s founders came from this part of the world, many of them with Jewish origins. Samuel Goldwyn, co-founder of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer was born in Warsaw as Szmul Gelbfisz. The Warner Bros was founded by the Wonsal brothers from Maków Mazowiecki (north of Warsaw). The Academy Award record holder with 6 wins, the director Billy Wilder was born near Krakow as Samuel Wilder. Richard Boleslawski, director of movies starring Marlena Dietrich, Greta Garbo or Clark Gable, also came from Poland.
