OMV said the decision was prompted by “multiple fundamental breaches of contractual obligations” by Gazprom Export. The Russian supplier stopped delivering gas to OMV in mid-November, the Austrian company said in a statement.
OMV added that previously it had received around 5TWh of gas per month at the Austria-Slovakia border. The contract, which ran from 2006, had been due to remain in force until 2040.
OMV’s CEO, Alfred Stern, said the company had a “diversified portfolio of alternative gas sources” to safeguard deliveries to its customers.
Austria’s chancellor, Karl Nehammer, said his country would not be “blackmailed” by Russia.
“Russia attempted to use energy as a weapon against us – but it failed,” he posted on the X platform on Wednesday.
