The Polish President visited the Vogtle nuclear power plant in Georgia during his trip to the USA to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Poland’s accession to NATO.
He mentioned that the same
“cutting-edge” AP1000 reactors will be installed by the American firm Westinghouse in Poland’s first nuclear power station.
Duda emphasized that nuclear power plant construction will provide Poland with energy security and fulfill the goals of the EU’s climate policy. In this context, he recalled the second investment being pursued by the private sector with state support.
The first nuclear power plant in Poland,
equipped with three Westinghouse AP1000 reactors with a total capacity of 3750 MWe, is to be built by the company Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (PEJ) in the Choczewo municipality in Pomorskie province. According to the schedule of the Polish Nuclear Energy Program,
the first block of the first nuclear power plant is expected to start operating in 2033.
The second nuclear power plant in Poland is planned as a joint venture between PGE PAK Energia Jądrowa and the Korean company KHNP. The plant is to have at least two APR1400 reactors with a total capacity of 2800 MW.
The nuclear power plant is scheduled to be operational in 2035 in Konin-Pątnów in Wielkopolskie province, on the grounds adjacent to the existing ZE PAK Group power plant.
The Vogtle nuclear power plant, operated by Georgia Power, is the only one in the USA composed of four blocks. Vogtle Blocks 1 and 2 are Westinghouse 4-Loop model reactors, commissioned in 1987 and 1989, respectively.
In November 2022, the Polish government adopted a resolution to build large-scale nuclear power plants in Poland. The first plant will be located in the coastal village of Choczewo,
with an estimated construction cost of USD 20 billion.
The commissioning of the first nuclear block is planned for 2033.
