Next to it there's some concise, insightful text that tells you all about the masterpiece on your screen.
This is the basic idea behind a Polish app that, having become a habit for art lovers worldwide, has now been honored with a major international prize.
Daily Art, which was founded 12 years ago, came top of the Cultural Impact category in the 2024 Apple App Store awards, which celebrate developers whose products made a profound practical or cultural impact this year.
The victorious app – chosen from a shortlist of 45 – was lauded for its ability to “fuel users' intellectual curiosity and wonder by connecting them to exceptional artwork across centuries and movements.”
Founder Zuzanna Stańska, who is a Warsaw-based art historian, told TVP World she believes the app's impact lies in "finding those artists who are often underestimated or forgotten.”
“We try to select works of art in a special way,” she said.
"In addition to famous names, such as Van Gogh or Monet, we show indigenous artists and a lot of women's art. We also platform local artists who may be known in one country, but not globally, like Chełmoński from Poland.”
Stańska launched the project after spotting a gap in the market for art-focused content that was both entertaining and informative.
The artwork of the day pops up on the app by midday Warsaw time. It is often a painting featuring vibrant palettes, figurative portraiture or a work from the Impressionist and Pre-Raphaelite school.
The accompanying descriptions are produced by a team of writers whose goal is to make the texts accessible and engaging, avoiding overly academic language while still offering valuable insight.
Given that the Apple Store hosts nearly two million apps, Daily Art's win in the Apple Store awards is a remarkable achievement.
