Yakiv Tkachenko, 45, was described in social media tributes as “a treasure” and “one of the most talented Ukrainian actors.”
The fallen artist was best known for roles in movies such as
Chernovyi (Red),
Pryputni (The Strayed), and Dovbush. Other credits include appearances in the Polish series,
Wataha (Wolfpack), and the high-profile international film
Mr. Jones, directed by Poland’s Agnieszka Holland.
Prominent director Oles Sanin led the tributes to Tkachenko in a post on Facebook, quoted in Ukrainian media.
“We talked two days ago. He was one of the most talented Ukrainian actors. A true knight. A true friend,” he wrote.
Actor Yevhen Chernykov said that Tkachenko was “extraordinary and bright” and a “sincere patriot of our country.”
“Yakiv created many vivid characters in our cinema and will forever remain in our hearts and memories. To be a warrior is to live forever,” he posted.
The sentiments were echoed by casting director, Alla Samoilenko, who described the actor as “so cinematic, so talented” and “a treasure.”
According to the Ukrainska Pravda news website, Tkachenko signed up to serve in the army soon after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
He participated in battles in the eastern Donetsk province, where he was twice wounded. Most recently, the actor was part of the 3rd Assault Brigade.
