“A Real Pain” by U.S. director Jesse Eisenberg has been nominated in the best musical or comedy category.
First shown at the Sundance Film Festival in January to critical acclaim, the movie tells the story of two childhood friends and cousins, David and Benji, who try to reestablish a connection with one another and with their family’s roots in Poland following the death of their beloved grandmother, Dory.
Eisenberg has also been nominated in two more categories: best performance by a male actor in a motion picture – musical or comedy, and best screenplay.
His on-screen foil, Kieran Culkin, will compete in a category called best performance by a male actor in a supporting role in any motion picture.
Competing in the best non-English language film category is “The Girl With the Needle,” a Danish-Swedish-Polish co-production directed by Magnus von Horn, a Swede who graduated from Poland’s renowned Łódź Film School.
The film centers on impoverished but determined factory worker Karoline, portrayed by Vic Carmen Sonne, who is desperately seeking to terminate a pregnancy resulting from an affair with her employer in post-World War I Copenhagen.
The 82nd Golden Globes will be handed out on January 5. The awards are presented by the Golden Globe Foundation, which in 2023 succeeded the now-defunct Hollywood Foreign Press Association in organizing the event.
