A mascot takes flight
Ciapek’s journey began as a stray, taken in by the ground personnel of the 305 Squadron. Despite his humble beginnings,
Ciapek quickly endeared himself to the squadron members, becoming an integral part of their daily lives. He was known for his loyalty, his intelligence, and his unwavering spirit.
As the squadron’s official mascot, Ciapek accompanied the airmen on their missions, flying alongside them as they braved the skies over Europe. Despite the dangers of aerial combat, Ciapek remained undaunted, earning his place as a cherished member of the squadron.
Adventures in the skies
Captain Observer Edward Kwolek, in his memories from the service in the Air Force, writes this about Ciapek:
“He had his oxygen bottle, which was opened at an altitude of about 3000 meters. He lay beside it, enjoying the oxygen. He also had parachute harnesses, which could easily be attached to the harnesses of one of the crew members responsible for the ‘passenger’ in the air. For each bombing mission,
Ciapek received a small bomb carved from wood, 2 and 1/2 cm long, and hung on a collar. He had up to eight of them on his collar.”
His presence brought a sense of comfort and camaraderie to the airmen, reminding them of home and the bond they shared with their faithful companion.
A miraculous return
Tragically, on one fateful mission, Ciapek’s aircraft failed to return, and he was presumed lost at sea. However, months later, to the astonishment of all, “A police officer on the northern coast of Norfolk found a dog on the beach with a collar marked with the inscription and 8 wooden bombs. The dog appeared lifeless, clearly washed ashore by the sea. The dog was wrapped up and transported to a nearby airport,” wrote Lt. Aleksander Onoszko in his memories from the war.
His miraculous return remains shrouded in mystery, but it served as a testament to his resilience and determination to reunite with his squadron.
Legacy and remembrance
Ciapek’s story has been immortalized in the memories of those who knew him and in various accounts from squadron members. From his mischievous antics on the airfield to his
brave adventures in the skies, Ciapek left an indelible mark on all who crossed his path.
Today, Ciapek’s legacy lives on as a symbol of courage and companionship amidst the chaos of war. His story serves as a reminder of the bond between humans and animals and the extraordinary ways in which they can uplift and inspire us, even in the darkest of times.
In the annals of World War II history, amidst tales of bravery and sacrifice, the story of Ciapek stands out as a
testament to the resilience of the human (and canine) spirit. As we remember the heroes of the past, let us not forget the four-legged companions who stood by their side, offering comfort, companionship, and unwavering loyalty in the face of adversity.
