The haul was found by enthusiasts from the ‘Galicja’ historical association in the forests of Baligród during a search for WWI relics.

“As it turns out, the forests around Bieszczady have a history that extends beyond World War I and goes back several centuries,” said Artur Hejnar of the Galicja group. “In May, one member of our group found a bronze dagger. Another dagger was also found and has been dated to the Middle Ages, just like the spearhead and axe that was found earlier in the region.”

A 19th-century brass ring was also found, with all of the discoveries since transferred to the Historical Museum in the southeastern town of Sanok.

The forests of Baligród have long fascinated historians and archaeologists, primarily due to the heavy fighting that took place there in the winter of 1915.
