It emerged that the camel had escaped from a nearby Mini Zoo and initially evaded the police who were searching for it.
The two-humped animal, typically found in the deserts of North Africa and the Middle East, appeared near the village of Bogaczewo on Sunday.
One driver managed to take a photo as the camel calmly walked along the county road toward the village of Strzelce.
“We received two reports of an exotic animal walking along the road, but police officers who arrived on the spot could not find the camel,” explained Iwona Chruścińska of the Giżycko District Police Station to the Polish daily Fakt.
She added that this was not the first time this situation had arisen, and the officers knew how to react.
“A few years ago, we had a similar report of a kangaroo escaping from the Mini Zoo, so police officers went to the animal’s owner. [In this case] it turned out that there was already an organized effort to capture the camel,” the policewoman explained.
Happily, the camel was returned to its enclosure later that day and the owner pledged to pay closer attention to his pet.
