According to scientists, earthquakes may foreshadow a volcanic eruption, even if there are no immediate signs.

For now, researchers have determined that a magma corridor lies between Sundhnjúkagígur and the sea, going under the town of Grindavík.

Anywhere along the magma corridor, maybe even within the town itself, a fracture could emerge and lava would explode.

The Icelandic Met Office (IMO) expresses worry that substantial volumes of molten rock, or magma, may be rising beneath the surface of Iceland.

It also stated that it was “not possible to determine exactly” in what place the magma could rise to the surface. Even before the evacuation of Grindavík, many inhabitants decided to leave town, either to friends and relatives or to aid centers of the Red Cross.
