“People are not letting their dogs out at night to prevent them from encountering the kangaroo. Gates are being left open, and porch lights are being left on in the hope of luring the kangaroo into someone’s yard. When we confine it to a limited area, there will be a chance to capture the animal,” said Iza from the “Przytul Psisko” Animal Protection Association, which operates in the neighboring Nowe Miasto district.

Iza estimated that employees of the Welski Landscape Park and volunteer firefighters with a drone have offered their assistance in tracking the kangaroo. “Many people genuinely care about the kangaroo’s fate, except for its owners, who let it escape,” Iza told the Polish Press Agency PAP.

According to information from people working in animal welfare organizations, the kangaroo they are looking for escaped from a private property around October 20.

The owners did not report it to any authorities, nor did they launch a search operation. The services realized that the kangaroo had escaped while they were tracking… another runaway kangaroo, named Felek.

“Felek was being transported from a breeding facility to new owners. Along the way, the new owners acted carelessly and opened the kangaroo’s cage, and Felek escaped. When we were looking for Felek, it turned out that another kangaroo was being spotted 30 kilometers away,” Iza said.

“When Felek was caught, it turned out that another kangaroo was on the loose. We have been intensively searching for this animal for the past two days. We receive reports from people who have seen it by the roadside or near properties, but the kangaroo is very skittish," she added.

According to the accounts of those who have seen the kangaroo, its condition is deteriorating. “It probably has something to eat because it’s an herbivore, but it is certainly frightened and stressed. It definitely poses a threat in terms of vehicle traffic, as it may enter the road,” said the “Przytul Psisko” animal welfare activist.

She admitted to PAP that the kangaroo in the Działdowo district is not the only one of its kind running free in Poland. “ A resident from the southern part of the country called me, asking many questions about the appearance of the kangaroo we are looking for, and finally admitted that a kangaroo also escaped from her. This happened two weeks ago. It seems that more and more people think that a kangaroo is just like a dog or a cat. It is not. Such an animal should be handled with care,” emphasized the PAP interviewee.

If the kangaroo is caught, it will be placed in a specialized breeding facility.
