The display of shooting stars, associated with comet 55P/Tempel–Tuttle, will be visible from the night of Sunday, November 17th, into the early hours of Monday, November 18th.
One of the fastest meteor showers, the Leonids produce meteors entering Earth’s atmosphere at speeds reaching 72 km/s (45 mi/s).
While not expected to reach the numbers seen in previous Leonid storms, which have sometimes seen thousands of meteors observed every hour, this year’s display could still offer up to 20 meteors per hour at its peak, according to the International Meteor Organization.
For the best view, experts recommend finding a dark location away from city lights and beginning observations around midnight.
The Leonid meteor shower is part of an annual phenomenon that runs from November 10th to 23rd, offering a glimpse into cosmic debris left by comet 55P/Tempel–Tuttle.
