March opens ‘antler season’ in Poland March in Poland gives a lot of opportunities for wildlife lovers. Currently, deer and elk are past their mating season and are starting to shed their antlers. A find of this kind is very valuable, not only as memorabilia, but something on which you can make a lot of money.

“Antlers are used to make jewelry, stucco elements, chandeliers, even knife handles,” a Daleszyce Forest District official listed off.

Antlers could even be priced at PLN 3,000 (EUR 700) depending on the antler size and overall appearance, with the largest specimens weighing up to about 10 kilograms. The problem arises when collectors deliberately drive away herds of deer, which lose antlers faster in stress and panic. This kind of behavior for the animals can end very badly.

Such irresponsible behavior poses a danger to humans as well. “A frightened animal can endanger traffic by suddenly going on the road,” forest ranger Andrzej Banasik appealed.

It is legal to collect shed antlers, as long as they are found within a commercial forest, and no one had intentionally contributed to them being shed.
