On Thursday evening, with the participation of Warsaw’s President Rafał Trzaskowski, the capital celebrated the opening of a new pedestrian and bicycle bridge spanning the Vistula River connecting Karowa Street in Powiśle to Okrzei Street in Praga.

The inauguration attracted many Warsaw residents from both sides of the Vistula, eager to witness the unveiling of what Trzaskowski praised as “a beautiful object and a new emblem of Warsaw.” He expressed hope that the bridge would seamlessly integrate into the Warsaw landscape and become a popular destination, especially during warm, festive days.

Unique to this bridge is the absence of separate lanes for pedestrians and cyclists, a deliberate design choice aimed at enhancing safety. Trzaskowski explained that dedicated bike lanes could have led cyclists to speed dangerously, especially given the significant inclines at both ends of the bridge.

The construction cost of this landmark amounted to approximately PLN 120 million (EUR 28, 88 mln).

Adam Grzelczak from Budimex, the contract manager, revealed that construction began in December 2021. The bridge spans 502 meters with a steel trapezoidal cross-section, providing significant load-bearing capacity and torsional stiffness. At its narrowest point, the bridge measures 6.9 meters in width, expanding to 16.3 meters across the river.

Supported by eight reinforced concrete pillars based on precast and CFA concrete piles, the bridge’s technical specifications were detailed by Grzelczak, who also noted its design to serve Warsaw residents for a century. The longevity of the bridge, however, will depend on its maintenance and protection against vandalism.

Before its official opening, the structure underwent load testing using 22 water tanks, each filled to 21,000 liters, passing with positive results. Grzelczak also mentioned that in emergencies, vehicles weighing no more than 3.5 tons could cross the bridge, aside from its primary users: pedestrians and cyclists.
