The Płock city zoo wrote their wishes to their oldest animal residents on Facebook on the National Senior Citizens’ day on Thursday.

“Today is Seniors’ Day, so wishes go out to our beloved oldest residents,” it read.

It followed with a list of the top 10 oldest animals they keep, with Marta sitting comfortably at the top. The animals that followed her in second and third place were a 47-year-old female condor and a 45-year-old grey seal.

Alligators usually live up to 60-70 years old, so there’s no surprise her age – edging almost towards a century – is a marvel to people.

Marta is a female alligator, born in 1930 in the U.S. state of Mississippi, and she’s a movie star. She gained her fame in 1970 when she starred as the crocodile Herman in the cult Polish comedy “Hydrozagadka” directed by Andrzej Kondratiuk.
Her scenes were filmed in the Zegrzynski lake north of Warsaw, which is a popular bathing spot for city dwellers in the summertime. At one point during the shooting, it seemed Marta had disappeared in the lake and the team was worried she might make it her new home. But luckily they found her and managed to take her back to Płock without a problem.

She arrived in Poland with a male alligator called Pedro on August 19, 1960 after she was bought by Polish engineer Tadeusz Wągrowski. The purchase was part of a “Crocodile Campaign”, in which residents of Płock sent books to the Polish diaspora in exchange for animals to display in the Płock zoo.

The zoo in Płock was established in 1951 and is home to about 7,500 animals and more than 580 species, including many rare, endangered species. The zoo has one of the largest didactic and scientific pavilions in Poland, which presents, among other things, an exposition of reptiles and amphibians, a tropical forest arrangement with original exotic plants, and aquariums with the fauna and flora of the seas and oceans of the globe.

The Plock Zoo has been a member of the World Organization of Zoological Gardens since 2002.
