Kasprowy Wierch, a crest in the Western Tatras and one of Poland’s biggest tourist attractions, as well as its main ski area, has accumulated 65 cm of snow, Tatra Volunteer Search and Rescue (TOPR) said.
TOPR said in a statement: “A very strong wind combined with significant snowfall has sharply worsened the avalanche situation. The problem is fresh deposits of wind-blown snow in all concave formations and on extensive snow fields, particularly above the tree line.
“These areas should be treated as particularly dangerous.”
Authorities at the Tatra National Park also warned that trails in higher parts of the mountains are covered with snowdrifts and fresh snow, rendering them almost invisible.
In some areas, deep snowdrifts have formed.
Snow cornices have formed along ridges, while low clouds and fog are impairing visibility, raising the risk of disorientation.
