The bird was stuck in a tree after a rope attached to its legs snagged on a branch.
Local residents alerted the fire department and it was rescued by firefighters and naturalists from a local animal rescue center called Mysikrólik.
The naturalist from Mysikrólik told Polish state broadcaster TVP Info that the bird was probably lost and was looking for its owner.
“This young individual probably scouted out its keeper and wandered around the neighborhood. Unfortunately, the extension - a rope about 2 meters long attached to the bird's bundled legs - got caught on a branch of a neighborhood tree,” the naturalists said.
The naturalists posted a video of the rescue mission on Facebook.
“The Harris’s hawk was slightly emaciated, so he was looked at by a veterinarian. He will spend the next few days in the Mysikrók, hoping that his guardian will show up to document his legal origin,” the naturalists added.
The Mysikrólik center in Bielsko-Biała is one of the few places in Poland that help sick or injured wild animals.
Harris’ hawks, formerly known as the bay-winged hawks, are large birds of prey that are native to southwestern United States, Chile, central Argentina and Brazil. A large percentage of them were brought to Europe, especially Britain, to be trained for falconry.
