The website took into account the abundance of walking trails, rainfall levels, safety, as well as the availability of public transportation and cycling infrastructure, recognizing them as vital alternatives in the absence of private vehicles.

Out of the top 10 cities deemed most “walkable,” nine are situated in Europe. Just behind Munich, Milan came in second, and the Polish capital completed the top three.

Warsaw was praised for its compact size and affordability of public transportation, with a one-way ticket priced at PLN 4.40 (EUR 1), making it the 20th cheapest globally and the cheapest among the top 10.

Moreover, a significant 74% of Warsaw’s population resides within 1 kilometer of car-free areas, “such as the pretty Lazienki Park (Łazienki Królewskie), which comes alive during the summer months; and the charming cobblestoned streets of the Old Town, which are lined with quirky colored buildings,” the website stated.

Elsewhere, Helsinki claims the fourth spot, followed by Paris in fifth, while Tokyo is the sole non-European city in the top 10, securing the sixth position.

Sydney narrowly misses the top 10, ranking 11th, while Melbourne follows closely in 17th place. Among American cities, New York City leads the pack, securing the 34th position.

‘Comparethemarket’ deemed Johannesburg, South Africa, the least walkable city. “Not only does it have the worst safety score (19.31), but just 8% of its population live within 1km of car-free spaces—the joint lowest on our list—and it has the sixth worst public transport score, too.”
