The pudu fawn, which is only 40 cm tall and the second-smallest deer in the world, was born in the Polish capital’s zoo on July 16 to two proud parents, Eva and Pitchu.
Posting on social media, the zoo said: “The female doesn't have a name yet, so we guess you know what that means.... WE'RE STARTING A POLL TO FIND A NAME FOR THE FEMALE PUDU!
“This year all the animals born in the Warsaw Zoo are being given names beginning with the letter ‘P’, and we ask for suggestions starting with this letter.”
The southern pudu is a native species to Chile and Argentina and is not to be confused with the northern pudu, which inhabits the northern Andes region of Latin America and is the world’s smallest deer.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List, which tracks the extinction risk of animals worldwide, classifies the southern pudu as ‘Near Threatened’.
Voting to name the Warsaw pudu will end on September 29.
The following day, keepers will choose four names that will advance to the semi-final vote scheduled for the following week.
