Only 35% of homes in Kharkiv, northeastern Ukraine, have electricity while only 50% are connected to heat, said Ihor Terekhov, the city’s mayor, on Saturday. In the aftermath of a massive Russian missile attack on Friday, electric transport in Kharkiv is not operating.

“We have started connecting some of Kharkiv’s neighborhoods to the electricity grid… We will work all night to connect as many Kharkiv residents as possible to heating,” Terekhov said on Ukrainian television.

Streetlights and electric transportation are also not working in Ukraine’s second-largest city, which had a population of more than 1.4 million before the Russian invasion.

“There is simply not enough power,” Terekhov admitted. He could not say when the repairs would be completed.

“I emphasize that this is very serious damage... That’s why it’s now difficult to talk about the timing of the restoration of these substations and the subsequent connection of the entire city to power,” Terekhov noted.

Massive air strike

Russia deployed a total of 151 missiles and strike drones against Ukraine, with Ukrainian air defense units successfully intercepting 92 of them.

These missiles struck critical infrastructure and energy facilities in more than a dozen Ukrainian regions, including Kharkiv, on Thursday night and Friday morning with rockets and drones. The attacks killed five and wounded about 20 people.
