The announcement comes after EC chief Ursula von der Leyen said on Tuesday that the European Commission had made its entire Civil Protection Mechanism available to assist Poland in its ongoing flood crisis.

The head of the EU’s executive will visit Wrocław in southwest Poland, where some of the worst flooding occurred. She will be joined by the prime ministers of the Czech Republic, Petr Fiala, and Slovakia, Robert Fico, as well as Karl Nehammer, the chancellor of Austria.

All their countries have been hit by floods.

Von der Leyen's visit was confirmed on Monday evening by Tusk, who wrote on X:

“I expect the EU to take very seriously the need to build anti-flood infrastructure in those countries that have suffered the most. On Thursday, the head of the Commission and I shall discuss it in detail.”

Southwestern Poland has suffered some of the worst flooding in decades following days of torrential rain.

On Tuesday, Poland’s Minister for Funds and Regional Policy, Katarzyna Pełczyńska-Nałęcz, posted on X that 1.5 billion złoty (€350 million) in EU funding is to be made available to repair residential property and energy infrastructure affected by the floods.

The minister said a further 3.5 billion złoty (€820 million) would be earmarked for the construction of flood barriers and reservoirs, which she described as “investments that will ensure long-term anti-flood security throughout Poland.”
