EU must effectively protect its territory: Polish, Greek prime ministers EU and member states must effectively protect their territories and control their borders, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has said after meeting in Warsaw with his Greek counterpart, PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

EU and member states must effectively protect their territories and control their borders, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has said after meeting in Warsaw with his Greek counterpart, PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Migration policy cannot be mired in chaos, disorder, and lack of control, Tusk added.

At a joint press conference, Tusk said that he and the Greek PM will try to effectively influence European strategies regarding Europe’s security, or migration.

The Polish PM said he and Mitsotakis would exchange experiences, including practical ones, when it comes to effective border protection against illegal migration.

“Both countries have a serious reason to deal with the problem of illegal migration,” Tusk said.

He explained that these different problems arise due to the geography and neighborhood of our countries.

“But we [Poles] have a point of view similar to Prime Minister Mitsotakis and the Greek nation, and it boils down to one sentence: EU and the member states must effectively protect their territories and must effectively control their borders. So that migration policy is not engulfed in chaos, disorder, and lack of any control,” Tusk announced.

"We, the sovereign states, not the bagmans, must decide who should come to our country. This requires significant cooperation between our countries, sharing experiences in dealing with this very complicated problem," noted the Greek Prime Minister.

Tusk also stated that Poland will offer Greece help in fighting against potential fires again this year, but the details are yet to be discussed.

On Thursday, Mitsotakis arrived in the Polish capital to participate in the EU’s Strategic Agenda consultations for 2024–2029, attended by European Council President Charles Michel and the leaders of Poland, Estonia, Finland, Ireland, Luxembourg, and Spain.

The meeting was devoted to border security and further support for Ukraine.

Friday’s talks between Tusk and Mitsotakis commenced at 11 am and were set to be followed by a joint press conference.

On Thursday, Tusk also hosted bilateral talks with Michel as well as Kaja Kallas and Luc Frieden, Estonia’s and Luxembourg’s prime ministers, respectively.
