Trump’s return to the White House as the 47th president of the United States has raised fears that America’s military and financial support for Ukraine could wane.
During his presidential campaign, Trump repeatedly claimed he could end the nearly three-year war “in one day” by urging Ukraine and Russia to cut a deal.
However, many in the EU worry that such a deal could involve pressuring Kyiv to cede territory to Moscow.
Ian Brzezinski, a senior fellow at the U.S.-based Atlantic Council think tank, told TVP World that in his first 100 days in office, Trump might pursue a double-pressure tactic, which could involve telling Russian President Vladimir Putin: “Cease and desist, accept a ceasefire, otherwise I will arm Ukrainians to the teeth.”
He added: “Then he’ll turn to [Ukrainian President Volodymyr] Zelenskyy and say, ‘cease and desist, accept a ceasefire, otherwise I will stop assistance to you’.”
Brzezinski said that this high-stakes strategy could be a “deal that Putin would grab quickly,” as it would allow him to regroup and position himself for a further attack against Ukraine.
However, Brzezinski said that Trump’s politics are marked by an aura of unpredictability, adding: “You never know with Trump. He often doesn’t do what he says he will do.”
“To my European friends, I say this is now a time to engage the Trump transition team to try and shape its perceptions,” Brzezinski concluded.
