The U.S. ambassador to Hungary, David Pressman, shared a joint statement from the senators on the X platform on Saturday.

“Our delegation and many of our congressional colleagues are increasingly concerned by Hungary’s deepening and expanding relationship with Russia and the continued erosion of its democratic institutions,” the senators wrote.

The statement also warned of Hungary furthering ties with China.

“Hungary also continues to disregard the concerns raised by its allies and partners about deepening its ties with China… We urge Hungary to listen to the concerns of its allies and to act on them,” it said. The delegation’s trip comes after the U.S. Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump, expressed praise for the Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán during the U.S. presidential debate against Vice President Harris, during which he called the Hungarian leader a “strongman.”

Trump and other Republican party members don’t agree on their support for Orbán, who is popular among the American conservative public because of the Hungarian leader’s clampdown on LGBT rights and immigration policies.

Shortly after Orbán called Trump a “man of peace” in August this year, the former U.S. president hosted the Hungarian leader in his home to discuss “peace mission 5.0” regarding Russia’s war in Ukraine.
