Georgian lawmakers on Saturday elected Mikheil Kavelashvili, a hardline critic of the West, as the new president, setting him up to replace the pro-Western incumbent Zourabichvili.
However, Zourabichvili considers the current government “illegitimate” and has said she will remain president after her term ends.
Georgian presidents are picked by a college of electors composed of MPs and representatives of local government.
Zourabichvili and opposition figures have claimed the country’s October parliamentary election, in which the Georgian Dream party won almost 54% of the vote, was fraudulent.
“I need to be supported now in my country, together with my population,” Zourabichvili said.
