Silina revealed that Latvia is currently producing drones in partnership with Ukrainian and Latvian companies, with the aim of facilitating their transfer to Ukraine. The first batch of drones, valued at EUR one million, is set to be sent to Ukraine shortly. Silina emphasized that these drones have already been rigorously tested by their Ukrainian counterparts and meet the required standards for combat operations.

Discussions between the two parties also revolved around the necessity for military instructors. Silina mentioned Latvia's potential involvement by deploying “one or more individuals” to oversee drone-related matters on the Ukrainian side.

PM Silina elaborated that since drone technology is constantly evolving, having a designated person on-site would enable quicker and more adaptable technical solutions.

“We will have to find someone who can, is capable, and wants to do it. If we cannot find one in Latvia, we will look for one within the drone coalition,” she stated.

Comprehensive support for Ukraine

Additionally, Silina highlighted Latvia’s commitment to providing comprehensive support to Ukraine, with total aid reaching EUR 850 million this year. This includes the announcement of a military aid package in April, totaling EUR 392 million, aimed at supplying material and technical resources, such as armaments and ammunition, from the reserves of the National Armed Forces. Moreover, Latvia will contribute approximately EUR 10 million towards joint procurement efforts for artillery ammunition, led by the Czech Republic.

The meeting also addressed reconstruction efforts in Ukraine, with Latvia allocating funds for projects in the Chernihiv region. Discussions concluded with plans for the 10th meeting of the Latvia-Ukraine Intergovernmental Committee, scheduled for May in Kyiv, focusing on economic cooperation and Ukraine’s integration process with the European Union.

Prime Minister Shmyhal expressed gratitude for Latvia’s unwavering support, particularly emphasizing the quality of drones produced in Latvia, which have been well-received by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Shmyhal expressed optimism about reaching a concrete agreement on joint drone production in the coming year.

Regarding potential changes in U.S. support following the upcoming presidential elections, Shmyhal stated that Ukraine respects the decisions of the U.S. public and looks forward to continued collaboration with the U.S. government regardless of the election outcome.
