Lower house speaker moves to put central bank chief before State Tribunal Poland’s lower house speaker has said he has forwarded a preliminary motion to the Constitutional Responsibility Committee to bring the Polish central bank’s chief before the State Tribunal.

Poland’s lower house speaker has said he has forwarded a preliminary motion to the Constitutional Responsibility Committee to bring the Polish central bank’s chief before the State Tribunal.

The Sejm Presidium decided to send the preliminary motion to the committee, with Szymon Hołownia saying that he will submit “the motion for the State Tribunal for NBP President Adam Glapiński to the Constitutional Responsibility Committee.”

“I will include a letter detailing all the concerns raised by the legislative office, the office of expertise, and the regulatory impact assessments,” he added.

Hołownia went on to say that the presidium and Sejm’s legal experts believe these concerns could jeopardize the motion if it proceeds to the final stage before the State Tribunal.

He stressed that the committee will ultimately decide on the matter. “It is the committee’s responsibility. However, it is my duty to inform them of the risks identified by the Sejm’s legal services,” Hołownia pointed out.

In late March, 191 deputies from the ruling coalition submitted a motion to bring NBP President Adam Glapiński before a State Tribunal.

They accused him of violating the constitution and laws, including indirectly financing the budget deficit through a bond-buying program, misleading the finance ministry in 2020–2021 without proper authorization from the Monetary Policy Council, and failing to maintain political neutrality.

NBP board members argue that this motion threatens the independence of Poland’s central bank.

Glapiński, whose mandate expires in 2028, could lose his job and, possibly, be banned from running for office or holding managerial positions.
