“The scenario of a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 is challenging for Poland. It can be assumed that the goals for 2040 will also be unattainable for Poland,” stated Hennig-Kloska before the start of the meeting of EU ministers responsible for energy.

“We, as the government, want ambitious goals, but ones that will take care of people and the economy. We must remember that it must be a fair transformation where no one is left behind. Poland - not only due to historical conditions but also its geopolitical position and climate conditions - simply has more to do. Every new goal should take this starting point into account,” emphasized the Polish minister.

In early February, the European Commission published an assessment of ways to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 for the EU. Based on this, the EC recommended a 90% reduction in net greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 compared to 1990 levels.

During the conversation with journalists, Hennig-Kloska was asked about the provisions of the Green Deal regarding agriculture.

“I understand Polish farmers and their revolt against this unequal competition. However, on the other hand, we must consider that every agriculture must adapt to changing climate conditions,” she said.

She added that the fundamental problem of ensuring the economic security of farmers and their families must be solved so that they can sustain themselves through work in agriculture.

Hennig-Kloska was also asked if there is a chance for the EU to abandon the ban on the sale of new petrol cars in Europe from 2035.

“This is a goal that will still be discussed. We will see where we stand with this goal. It is to be discussed in the process of reaching the goal,” she said.
