Krzysztof Gawkowski, who is also a deputy prime minister, said Poland is the EU member state most under attack from Russia. He told a press conference that between January and mid-October 2024, more than 80,000 cyberattacks had been recorded.
He also said Moscow’s chief spy agency—the Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU)—had a division specifically for waging disinformation and sabotage against Poland.
He added that the Kremlin intended to interfere in Poland’s presidential election, scheduled for May this year.
Warsaw has taken steps to guard the country’s cyberspace, Gawkowski said, highlighting extensive funding earmarked for the purpose as well as the establishment of a special coordination center.
Poland has been one of Ukraine’s staunchest allies in its war with Russia. Meanwhile, tensions between Warsaw and Moscow have recently risen amid accusations that Russia is engaged in sabotage in Poland as part of a ‘hybrid war’ strategy.
In December, the Russian foreign ministry ordered the closure of Poland’s diplomatic post in St. Petersburg in retaliation for Poland ordering the closure of Russia’s consulate general in the western city of Poznań.
