Nuclear energy to play pivotal role in Poland’s mix: minister Nuclear energy will be a significant element of Poland’s energy mix as a reliable source of electricity, stated Climate and Environment Minister Paulina Hennig-Kloska, as quoted in the ministry’s press release.

Nuclear energy will be a significant element of Poland’s energy mix as a reliable source of electricity, stated Climate and Environment Minister Paulina Hennig-Kloska, as quoted in the ministry’s press release.

“We believe that the development of nuclear energy will contribute to the increase in energy security in Europe and allow for reducing dependence on the import of Russian energy resources. Nuclear energy will be a significant element of Poland’s energy mix as a reliable source of electricity,” Hennig-Kloska pointed out during a meeting with the Canadian Ambassador to Poland, Catherine Godin.

The meeting took place on March 28 at the ministry’s headquarters.

The body assured in January of this year that there are no grounds for changing the location of the first Polish nuclear power plant, and the decision to locate the nuclear power plant in the Choczewo municipality is final.

Changing the location would necessitate the commencement of the entire process from scratch, including ongoing studies since 2017, which could delay the entire investment by up to 10 years.

On July 11, 2023, the Minister of Climate and Environment, at the request of the Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (PEJ), a company implementing tasks aimed at ensuring the energy security of Poland, issued a fundamental decision formally confirming that the investment in the first nuclear power plant in Poland is in line with the public interest and with the state’s pursued policy, including energy policy.

This document entitles the PEJ to apply for further administrative decisions and later for a construction permit at the specified location.

The PEJ obtained key administrative decisions; on September 19, 2023, the General Director of Environmental Protection issued a decision on environmental conditions for the first nuclear power plant, and on October 26, 2023, the Pomeranian province issued a decision on the determination of the investment location for the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Poland.
