Poland calls Security Services Advisory Council to probe Russian intelligence threats The Polish government has called a Secret Services Council meeting to examine threats posed by Russian and Belarusian spies.

The Polish government has called a Secret Services Council meeting to examine threats posed by Russian and Belarusian spies.

The Wednesday meeting comes following a spate of arrests of men and women accused of being Kremlin and Minsk agents and the case of a Polish judge who has asked Belarus for political asylum.

Tomasz Szmydt sparked outrage after turning up in the Belarusian capital on Monday, where he asked for ‘care and protection’ from Polish authorities.

He is now being investigated for links to Russian and Belarusian intelligence and his access to sensitive information relating to NATO and the EU.

During the special meeting, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said: “Signals about the very aggressive presence of foreign services that are hostile to us in Europe are getting stronger every day and will also get stronger in connection with the elections to the European Parliament;, we must be aware of this.

“We are not dealing with a one-off feat, but with a case that had its origins a long time ago.

“We cannot ignore it, because it is not a matter of morals or a media sensation, but we must be aware that the Belarusian services worked with a person who had direct access to the Minister of Justice and was responsible for destroying the judicial system in Poland.”
