Von der Leyen visited Poland on Thursday in the aftermath of the worst floods to hit Central and Eastern Europe in over 20 years.

Following talks with Tusk and the prime ministers of the Czech Republic and Slovakia, Petr Fiala and Robert Fico, as well as Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer, von der Leyen confirmed that €10 billion from the EU Cohesion Fund would be allocated to nations hit by the floods.

“These are extraordinary times, and extraordinary times need extraordinary measures,” she said.

“This is a very important moment. I am here to reassure you that Europe stands by your side…we all have to stand together to overcome the challenge,” she added. Later, Tusk told private broadcaster Polsat News that Poland would receive €5 billion out of the total €10 billion.

He said: “Very specific things have been agreed…It will be €5 billion for us.” However, Tusk emphasized that “there is no point jumping for joy, because we still have floods and dramas.”

Massive flooding that began on Friday has claimed seven lives in Poland and laid waste to swathes of its southwestern regions.
