The Polish government is meeting on Tuesday to discuss a draft resolution prepared by the Ministry of Development and Technology on the negotiations for a free trade agreement between the European Union and the Mercosur bloc, which includes Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia and Uruguay.
The agreement, which envisages the creation of a free trade zone for 700 million people, was agreed to in 2019 after 20 years but has not been ratified. Farmers are among the groups who have expressed their disapproval of the proposal.
“The Council of Ministers expresses its opposition to the current results of negotiations with Mercosur in the area of agriculture, in particular to the increase in tariff quotas for poultry meat at the last stage of the exchange of tariff offers,” Tusk said.
He added that it was a political message that Poland would not accept the EU-Mercosur agreement in its current form.
“We are not alone; many member states have a similar opinion,” Tusk said.
