The initiative, unveiled by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in May, is designed to strengthen Poland's borders with Belarus and Russia.

The Baltic states have proposed a similar joint effort, and discussions are underway among all four countries on how to integrate these initiatives.

According to Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk, the primary objective of the program is to deter potential adversaries from considering any aggression against Poland.

He said that Poland has engaged in bilateral discussions with Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, and Finland on this matter, and has explored potential co-financing with the European Investment Bank (EIB).

Tomczyk also disclosed plans to deploy additional troops to address the migration crisis along the Belarusian border.

Under “Safe Podlasie” (Podlasie is Poland’s eastern region bordering Belarus) operation set to commence on August 1, troop numbers on the border with Belarus will increase to 17,000, with 8,000 soldiers actively patrolling the border and 9,000 in reserve, ready for rapid deployment within 48 hours.

These troop deployments are slated to last six months amid escalating tensions along the border zone, fueled by Russian and Belarusian hybrid warfare – smuggling of migrants and refugees into the region.

This intensified migration pressure led to several incidents, resulting in injuries and fatalities among border personnel.
