In a live social media chat on Saturday, Rafał Trzaskowski, the liberal mayor of Warsaw and candidate backed by the governing centrist Civic Coalition (KO) in this year’s Polish presidential elections, said that over the next six months, Poland would steer the direction of the EU as the presiding country of the EU Council, prioritizing security.

Poland officially began its six-month rotating presidency of the EU Council on Friday, with the inaugural event held at the Grand Theatre – National Opera in Warsaw.

Trzaskowski also pointed out that Poland’s presidency coincides with discussions on the future EU budget.

He said: “A major budgetary battle is ahead of us, as we are preparing to set budgetary directions for the coming years. We want to ensure that we can continue to pursue the EU's most important priorities, primarily investing in regions that need investment the most, including in Poland.

“The implementation of priorities that the EU has set for itself: apart from security, innovation, competitiveness, and energy transformation, all of which place the citizen at the center.

He added: “Security is the direction Poland will propose.”

Trzaskowski said that the EU must give greater priority to security issues and allocate more funds for the purpose, including securing Poland’s eastern border.

When asked about his strategy for strengthening defense as president and commander-in-chief of the Polish Armed Forces, Trzaskowski said that in 2026, Poland should allocate 5% of its GDP to defense.

Already, among NATO countries, Poland allocates the largest share of its GDP to defense, spending 4.12%.

Trzaskowski backs farmers

Referring to the protest organized by Polish farmers in Warsaw on Friday against the EU’s free trade deal with the Mercosur bloc, Trzaskowski voiced his support for the farmers, calling the EU-Mercosur agreement a bad deal that should not be ratified.

He said: “I hope that Poland will manage to build a blocking coalition, together with France, possibly with Italy, Austria, and that enough voices will be gathered to prevent the agreement from coming into force.”

In December 2024, the EU finalized a trade deal with Mercosur – a South American trading bloc comprising Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, Uruguay and a handful of associate countries.

The agreement, which was reached after more than two decades of negotiations, has faced strong pushback from EU farmers, as well as Poland and France.

Polish farmers argue that the deal will inundate the European market with cheap and harmful agricultural products from South America.
