Nawrocki is the head of the state-run Institute of National Remembrance (IPN). The historian has never held a top government post and is a lesser known name than the party’s other mooted candidates.

Nawrocki is a more moderate choice than some of the more established Law and Justice candidates, such as the former education minister Przemysław Czarnek.

Rafał Trzaskowski, the mayor of Warsaw, was announced on Saturday, as the official candidate of the centrist Civic Coalition, the leading party in the Polish government.
