At the European Forum for New Ideas conference in Sopot, Tusk said that Poland’s offshore wind farms are projected to generate 18 gigawatts of energy.
“It is four times more than the planned capacity of the nuclear power plant we are just starting to build in Pomerania,” he said.
Tusk added that there is no need to build many new wind turbines, as upgrading the turbines could increase their power output by 400-500%.
He pointed out that modernizing the energy grid and securing financial partners for a second nuclear plant will be crucial for Poland's energy future.
The prime minister said that his government plans to invest 70 billion zloty (€16.3 billion) over the next decade to upgrade Poland’s energy transmission networks.
Despite putting an emphasis on wind turbines, Tusk also said that Poland is fully committed to building its first nuclear power plant.
“We take all the burden on ourselves when it comes to building the first nuclear power plant. On the other hand, with the second one we have to look for financial partners.”
