Speaking at a press conference Wednesday morning, Sikorski said that Poland would “rise to the occasion” and step up to any challenges presented by the new Trump administration.
He added that he was already in touch with representatives of Trump’s camp.
“The American people have made a decision that we respect,” said Sikorski. “The correctness of Poland’s foreign policy, which consisted of maintaining contact with both Democrats and Republicans, has also been affirmed.”
He continued: “Europe must urgently take greater responsibility for its security.
“With its defense spending and decisions on migration policy, Poland is doing what its allies are only just beginning to do.”
Sikorski went on to highlight Poland’s increased geopolitical standing, saying: “With regained credibility in the EU and good relations with the U.S., Poland will become a leader in increasing the EU’s resilience.
“The wind of history is blowing even stronger. Poland’s leadership will rise to the occasion.”
Sikorski’s comments come amid fears that Trump’s presidency could see a reformatting of NATO.
Trump has repeatedly threatened to withdraw the U.S. from the alliance, accusing some European members of failing to meet defense expenditure guidelines.
