Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk revealed on Wednesday that the government’s comprehensive reconstruction is now complete, marking a transition in the country’s political landscape. As part of this restructuring, four ministers are slated to tender their resignations on Friday, May 10, signaling a strategic reshuffle within the administration. Tusk urged Justice Minister Adam Bodnar to take immediate steps, in collaboration with the disciplinary court and potentially the Supreme Court, to revoke the immunity of Judge Tomasz Szmydt.

Addressing reporters after a session of the Security Services Advisory Council, Tusk disclosed that consultations have taken place with President Andrzej Duda’s Office to ensure a smooth transition and seamless integration of new appointees into key ministerial positions.

While the Prime Minister will officially announce the names of the incoming ministers on Friday, the ceremonial oath-taking event at the Presidential Palace is expected to occur in the subsequent week, owing to prior commitments in the President’s schedule.

Emphasizing the urgency of the government’s agenda, Tusk underscored that the newly appointed ministers will swiftly assume their responsibilities, demonstrating a commitment to effective governance and continuity in leadership.

In response to inquiries about potential changes in ministry structures, Tusk hinted at a modest downsizing, suggesting a nuanced approach to optimizing government efficiency while preserving essential functions.

This imminent government transition is pivotal in Poland’s political landscape, signaling a concerted effort to adapt to evolving challenges and priorities. With the nation poised for a new chapter under refreshed leadership, expectations are high for the incoming ministers to navigate complex issues, especially in light of upcoming European elections.
Judge immunity issue

PM Tusk also addressed the issue of Judge Tomasz Szmydt, saying his immunity should be immediately revoked. As reported by the PM, he urged Justice Minister Adam Bodnar to act swiftly in cooperation with the disciplinary court and possibly the Supreme Court.

This call to action follows recent events involving Szmydt, who made headlines on Monday by seeking asylum from Belarusian authorities. His actions have since come under intense scrutiny from law enforcement and prosecution authorities, who are investigating potential espionage implications.

Tusk emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating “Judge Szmydt’s formal status as a judge remains, but removing his immunity is essential to progress with any further actions.”

He highlighted the gravity of the matter, describing Szmydt's actions as indicative of state betrayal, warranting extraordinary measures rather than routine procedures.

The Security Services Advisory Council, an advisory body operating under the Council of Ministers, oversees the operations of various national security agencies, including the Internal Security Agency, Intelligence Agency, Military Counterintelligence Service, Military Intelligence Service, and Central Anti-Corruption Bureau.
