Admiral Henrique Gouveia e Melo told a press conference on Sunday that “there is a transit of Russian Federation ships in our waters—an increasingly intense transit, from North to South and from South to North.”

The admiral added that recent activity included three warships (two frigates and a corvette), two refueling ships, three scientific research ships and “a ship that carries out espionage, normally electronic espionage.”

“Our response to that is to follow them, control them, keep them under constant pressure with our constant presence,” he said. Gouveia e Melo was speaking at the Lisbon Naval Base in Alfeite during the return of the D. Francisco de Almeida, a frigate with a 167-member crew that had participated in a NATO mission.
