Fragments from a Russian Geran 1/2 drone were discovered on Thursday near Plauru, a sparsely populated Romanian village located directly across from the Ukrainian southern port town of Izmail. Romanian Foreign Minister Luminița Odobescu said: “More heinous attacks have been perpetrated by Russia against Ukrainian civilian infrastructure. Debris has been found on Romanian territory.”
NATO confirmed that there was no sign of an intentional attack on alliance territory but expressed concern over the incident.

“While NATO has no information indicating any intentional attack by Russia against Allied territory, these acts are irresponsible and potentially dangerous,” a NATO spokesperson said.

The Romanian defense ministry is now looking for other fragments to ensure that all locations where they might have fallen “were outside residential areas and no infrastructure elements were damaged.”

On Thursday, Russian drones attacked the port city of Izmail for the second consecutive night, destroying an administrative building and injuring two people inside a house.

The attacks were part of a wave of 38 drones that Russia launched overnight, the Ukrainian air force said. It added that three of the drones crossed into neighboring Romania.

Romania, which shares a 650-km border with Ukraine, has experienced multiple incidents of Russian drone fragments straying into its territory over the past year.

In response to the latest incursion, two Finnish F-18 fighter jets, part of NATO’s air policing missions in Romania, were scrambled to monitor the situation.
