Prosecutors are investigating whether funds used in Georgescu’s campaign were linked to money laundering, corruption, and foreign interference, allegedly involving Russia.

The Romanian prosecutor’s office said: “The searches concern the possible involvement of an individual in the illegal financing of the election campaign of a candidate for the presidency of Romania.”

It added that the money used for the campaign is “suspected of originating from crimes and subsequently being used in the process of money laundering.”

Reports suggest over €1 million was spent promoting Georgescu’s campaign on TikTok by Bogdan Peschir, despite Georgescu declaring zero expenses.

Raids also targeted groups accused of promoting fascist, racist, and xenophobic ideologies.

Authorities linked these actions to events celebrating Corneliu Zelea Codreanu, founder of Romania’s fascist Iron Guard, attended by far-right figures, including Romania’s far-right party S.O.S leader Diana Șoșoacă.

On Friday, the Constitutional Court annulled the elections, citing irregularities and foreign interference, forcing the entire process to restart just days before the planned runoff.
