Russia’s state news agency, TASS, cited foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova as saying the ministry had summoned Britain’s ambassador.
The man was identified as Edward Pryor Wilkes, the second secretary in the British Embassy’s political department.
The Moscow Times said the foreign ministry had revoked his diplomatic accreditation and given him two weeks to leave the country.
Russian state TV showed images of Pryor Wilkes, – said to be a replacement for one of six U.K. officials expelled on espionage allegations in August – and reported that state security service FSB had accused him of “providing false information on his documents and carrying out espionage and sabotage activities.”
He is also accused of activities that showed “signs of intelligence and subversive work.”
The development is the latest in a series of expulsions on both sides amid deteriorating relations between the two countries.
Last week, Ukraine used British-supplied Storm Shadow missiles to strike targets inside Russia.
