The newspaper, the Kyiv Post, published video footage on the X platform on Wednesday morning showing what appeared to be a huge fireball the paper said was in the town of Toropets in the Tver region.

The paper said evacuations had commenced in “several settlements across the region” after drones struck “what may have been one of the largest missile and ammunition storage locations in the country.” The BBC cited the local governor as saying emergency services were trying to “localize” the blaze, while local authorities said the situation was under control and buses were waiting to move people away. It was not immediately clear how many people were being evacuated from the town of around 13,000.

The BBC said attacks had also been reported overnight in the western Russian regions of Bryansk, Kursk, Oryol and Smolensk. Authorities cited by the news service said almost 50 drones had been shot down in addition to two missiles.

Meanwhile, in Ukraine, overnight aerial attacks were reported near the capital, Kyiv, as well as in the northeastern city of Sumy near the Russian border.
