The victory is a significant step on Trump’s long road of return to the White House. With polls putting him and Kamala Harris, his Democratic opponent, neck-and-neck, the election could come down to just who wins the seven swing states of Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Arizona, Georgia and North Carolina.

Trump is looking to become the first president since Grover Cleveland to return to the White House for a second term after a four-year break.

The Republicans are also on the verge of assuming a majority in the Senate after winning seats in Ohio and West Virginia and staving off challenges in Texas and Nebraska.
