Hołownia, who is on a three-day visit to Turkey, said that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had expressed his condolences on Wednesday over the floods and had offered to provide any assistance needed.

The parliamentary speaker said: “Turkey is ready to provide any help that Poland may need in this difficult time.

“If there is a need for human power, rescuers, or other types of support, they will rush to provide such support.

“This is an important moment of acceleration in Polish-Turkish relations, and both President Erdoğan and I drew attention to it.”

Hołownia told journalists that it was a “key political meeting” and that the two countries were “united by the fact that we are strong members of the North Atlantic Alliance.”

He added that Poland supports Turkey's accession to the EU “with all its consequences.”

Although Turkey’s accession negotiations with the EU began in 2005, relations with the bloc have been strained due to Turkey's violation of basic democratic principles.

More recently, Turkey has opened a channel of communication with Russia. Hołownia said: “We probably place different emphasis on many issues. But that doesn't change the fact that, being in NATO and lying where we are, we have to cooperate.

“Our people like each other.”

On Thursday, Hołownia will meet the Chairman of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, Numan Kurtulmuş, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hakan Fidan.

On Friday, he will visit the Incirlik Air Base, where he will meet soldiers of the Polish Military Contingent.
