The strike targeted the Rostov-na-Donu submarine and a battery of an S-400 Triumf anti-aircraft missile system deployed in Sevastopol in Russian-occupied Crimea.

The information was released after the General Staff received confirmation of the strike, which was carried out by Ukrainian missile forces in cooperation with the navy on Friday, being successful.

“As a result of the strike, the submarine sank on the spot,” General Staff said in a post on its Telegram channel on Saturday.

The B-237 Rostov-na-Donu (named after the city of Rostov-on-Don) was a Kilo-class (according to NATO classification) diesel-electric propulsion submarine and one of four vessels in it the Kilo class equipped with Kalibr cruise missiles. Launched on December 26, 2014, Rostov-na-Donu was severely damaged by a Ukrainian missile strike carried out on September 13, 2023. The 2023 strike was likely carried out using Western-provided weapons systems.
The vessel was subsequently repaired and tested in the waters of the Sevastopol harbor, which formally serves as the headquarters of the Russian Navy’s Black Sea Fleet. However, repeated strikes against its facilities forced the bulk of the fleet to relocate to a base in Novorossiysk in southwestern Russia.

“The destruction of the Rostov-na-Donu submarine once again proves that there is no safe place for the Russian Navy in the Ukrainian territorial waters of the Black Sea,” the General Staff said.

The value of the destroyed submarine is estimated at $300 million.
