Zelenskyy told a press conference on Wednesday he would be visiting the capitals of the U.K., France, Germany, and Italy within the space of 48 hours to present the five-point plan he detailed last month to Joe Biden and the two U.S. presidential candidates, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.
The Ukrainian president said he would then outline his plan to Kyiv’s partners at a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group scheduled for Saturday at Germany’s Ramstein air base. But the Ramstein meeting was later postponed due to hurricane Milton precluding Joe Biden’s attendance.
The cancellation of the Ramstein summit places a greater onus on Zelenskyy’s tour, which will also include meetings in Paris, Berlin and Rome. The Ukrainian president needs to persuade European leaders to give both political and material support to his plan, which, he says, could bring an end to the war next year.
In London, the Ukrainian president will also meet Foreign Secretary David Lammy as well as Rutte, who will be making his first trip to the U.K. since becoming NATO chief.
Downing Street said that during the talks with Starmer, the British prime minister would reiterate the U.K.'s “ironclad” support for Kyiv. Number 10’s press office declined to comment on whether the use of British Storm Shadow for deep strikes within Russia would be on the agenda.
Also on Thursday, Zelenskyy is expected to meet President Macron in Paris before traveling on for meetings with the German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, and President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Berlin, Reuters reported citing unnamed sources.
While in Rome, the Ukrainian head of state will also meet Pope Francis, who suggested in March that Ukraine should show the “courage of the white flag.”
