The German defense ministry offered to send the Patriots to NATO ally Poland at the start of the new year.
Poland’s defense minister, Władysław Kosianiak-Kamysz, responded by saying: “As decided by NATO, from January 2025 we will have another allied support for our air defense. We welcome Germany's decision to direct Patriot system batteries to Poland.”
According to the German defense ministry, the units could be deployed for up to six months , with the country’s defense minister Boris Pistorius saying they would protect a logistics hub key for supplies to Ukraine.
From January to November 2022, Germany deployed 300 troops together with three Patriot units to Poland.
They were based in the town Zamość, about 50 km from the Ukrainian border, to protect the southern town and its crucial railway link to Ukraine.
The deployment was triggered by a stray Ukrainian missile that struck the Polish village of Przewodów in November 2022, in an incident that raised fears of the war in Ukraine spilling over the border.
