The 52-year-old won his party’s primaries on Saturday, defeating his sole rival, Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, by a considerable margin of 49.5%.
Born on January 17, 1972, in Warsaw, Trzaskowski is a trained political scientist specializing in European studies.
He began his political career as a member of the European Parliament from 2009 to 2013, where he worked on digital policy and EU enlargement.
In 2014, he was appointed Minister for Administration and Digitization in the cabinet of Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who is also the current Polish prime minister and leader of the KO.
Four years later, Trzaskowski successfully ran for mayor of Warsaw as the candidate of Civic Platform (PO), a center-right political party, defeating Patryk Jaki of the ruling right-wing Law and Justice (PiS) party.
Trzaskowski gained national limelight in 2020 when he ran for president, losing to incumbent Andrzej Duda, an ally of PiS, after a tightly contested race.
Staunchly pro-European Union in his outlook, Trzaskowski is known for his strong advocacy of civil rights, environmental sustainability, and social inclusivity.
His support for civil unions for same-sex couples, opposition to Poland’s strict abortion laws, and restoration of state support for in-vitro fertilizations have made him particularly popular among young, left-leaning voters, who formed the bulk of his support in the 2020 presidential election.
Trzaskowski has been married to Małgorzata Trzaskowska since 2002, and the couple has two children.
